1 Nephi 5:9

9  And it came to pass that they did rejoice exceedingly, and did offer asacrifice and burnt offerings unto the Lord; and they gave bthanks unto the God of Israel.
“and did offer sacrifice… and they gave thanks…”
-(7/8/95) One quality that is common to all great people –the very quality that makes them great- is their disposition to give prompt thanks to God.  This indicates not only their gratitude for His prospering hand, but equally important is their recognition of their own reliance on Him for survival and all that they might receive.

-notice at what time they gave thanks… what was the order of events:
                        1. sons return
                        2.  Sariah corrects her attitude, “cleanses the inner vessel”, testifies of the truth
                        3.  offers thanks
                        4.  examine the object of their thanks  à the brass plates.
Before they even began to focus on the brass plates they stopped for a few moments and acknowledged God’s hand in their situation.  We often eventually come to say “thank you” as an after thought more than anything.
